A note on public life
A few small observations at the café down the alley, where the city quietly tells its own story.
This morning I sat at the café down the alley longer than usual. Not for the coffee, but for the way people greet one another — a nod, an offhand question about a child, about last night’s rain.
Public life doesn’t live in the grand square. It lives in the small pockets where strangers briefly stop being strangers.
In Đà Nẵng, that small pocket is often the sidewalk. A plastic chair turned toward the street is an invitation. I wonder: as the city grows, where will those chairs go?
Maybe what I’m really recording here isn’t the café, but a hypothesis: that care between people needs a physical place to happen. Take away that place, and we take away more than we think.
